History
Our Origins
The Lobster Foundation of Massachusetts (LFoM) was founded as an extension of the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association (MLA)—a nonprofit trade organization established in 1963 that represents the majority of lobster fishermen across the state. LFoM was created to focus specifically on research and education supporting the American Lobster industry within Massachusetts waters.

Scientific Partnerships
LFoM maintains strong, long-term partnerships with leading scientists and educators from institutions including the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the Universities of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island, MIT’s Sea Grant Program, and the Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries (MADMF). These collaborations fuel research initiatives that have had a direct, positive impact on lobster management and conservation.
The Importance of the Massachusetts Lobster Fishery
Massachusetts is home to the second-largest American Lobster fishery in the United States and ranks third worldwide. As a primary distribution hub for American Lobster globally, our state plays a vital role in the industry’s health and sustainability. Preserving this natural resource through responsible, science-based practices is central to LFoM’s mission.

Driven by the Industry, for the Industry
LFoM is guided by a board of officers and members drawn primarily from the Massachusetts lobster community—people with firsthand experience and deep knowledge of the industry’s evolving challenges. Their insights help ensure our efforts remain rooted in the practical needs of the fishery.
Operating Efficiently
To keep administrative overhead at an absolute minimum, the Foundation operates from a small, donated office in Scituate. We rely on volunteer resources, donated materials, and the dedication of a single staff member. This lean model ensures more funding goes directly to impactful research and outreach.

Looking Ahead
LFoM is committed to strengthening our existing partnerships and welcoming new collaborators who share our vision for a healthy, sustainable lobster fishery. Together, we are building a stronger future for one of Massachusetts’ most valuable natural resources.
